Drones are increasingly vital across industries like delivery, power line inspection, agriculture, and emergency services, where safe navigation through complex environments is crucial. To detect obstacles and understand their surroundings, drones typically rely on cameras, LiDAR, and ultrasonic sensors. However, these technologies often falter in fog, rain, dust, or low-light conditions, with shadows, glare, or sudden light changes further compromising camera reliability.
Millimeter-wave radar presents an alternative. It uses high-frequency radio waves to detect objects, measure distance and speed, and determine direction. Unlike cameras, it operates effectively in poor weather and low visibility. Equipped with this technology, drones can fly more safely and undertake more challenging missions.
The previous radar systems detect objects in 3 dimensions: distance, direction and speed. 4D radar adds elevation. This will give drones more information about the surroundings around them.
